The west London district of Edgware, located just 10 miles north west of Charing Cross, is today a bustling suburb, but previously it was in the county of Middlesex, while in Saxon times it was named Ecgi’s Weir. The district enjoyed the wide open space of nearby Cannons Park, an estate developed by the 1st Duke of Chandos, James Brydges. The district had its own race meetings in the middle of the 19th century, with the inaugural thoroughbred meeting held on Friday 4th August 1848. However, prior to this meeting pony races were a feature in Edgware from the early years of the 19th century. At the August 1848 meeting the Edgware Sweepstake was won by The Witch for Mr Simpson, beating Young Robert, while the Edgware St Leger went to Mr Caffles Bohemian. Meetings continued annually and in 1859, at the three day meeting from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th August, races were staged alongside the local Fair.
